A balanced offense and a big first half helped Drew’s men’s
basketball team defeat the visiting Berkeley Bulldogs, 72-58, in Baldwin
Gym. Gerard Mullin led the Rangers with
17 points including 11 in the second half.
Mike Mayes added 14 for Drew which led by 19 at the half and never by
fewer than eight points in the second period.
Drew men's hoops ranks seventh in NCAA Division III in Three Point
Field Goals Made Per Game with 9.9. The Rangers are led by sophomore Kyle Joyce's 3.7 3-pt field goals per game average, good for 15th in the NCAA.
Jessica Del Vecchio hit a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left to secure a 54-52 win over the Pomona-Pitzer in California. Del Vecchio, who led all scorers with 18 points, calmly knocked down the foul shots for the game's final points. The Sagehens had a final chance, but the Rangers forced the hosts into a tough shot with two seconds remaining. Emma Grossman added 11 for the Rangers. Drew improves to 7-3 with the win.
Drew women’s basketball was victimized by a torrid second half by the host Redland Bulldogs in an 82-56 loss. The Bulldogs led early in the first half, 17-3, but Drew clawed its way back into the game by pulling within two at the break, trailing 31-33. Redlands returned to action in the second period and stunned the Rangers by shooting 84.2% from the floor, going 16-for-19 in the half.
Drew men’s basketball lost to Lynchburg, 84-60, in the consolation game at the Tampa Bay Shootout. Kyle Joyce led the Rangers with 17 points while Gerard Mullin added ten. Mason Woolridge led the Hornets with 16. For the second straight game the Rangers found themselves in a big hole after the first half before playing the second half even.
